Ana Montenegro Park
The City of Baldwin Park is excited to share with residents and visitors Ana Montenegro Park. To be located at a vacant lot on the corner of Maine Avenue and Joanbridge Street, Ana Montenegro Park will help fulfill the City’s mission to create more greenspace in the community. It will be the first new park established in the City since its incorporation in 1956.
In late 2022, the City acquired the 8,342-square-foot parcel for the purpose of building a mini-park and addressing issues of equity and environmental justice in the northern quadrant of the City. The park will be named after former Baldwin Park City Treasurer Ana Montenegro, one of the first Latinas elected to public office in California and a dedicated local teacher.
Ana Montenegro Park will fit seamlessly into the City’s existing Comprehensive Park Master Plan, which envisions connectivity to the adjacent San Gabriel Bike Trail. It will be located less than a quarter-mile from the Emerald Necklace and Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area Bike Trail.
Ana Montenegro Park will provide a range of benefits to the community, such as:
· Amenities, like picnic areas, playgrounds and fitness equipment
· Sustainable landscaping designed to create and maintain an inclusive and welcoming space for all visitors
· Artistic installations celebrating Baldwin Park’s culture and history. The artwork pays homage to Ana Montenegro’s passion for cultural programs.
· Trails for exploration and connecting visitors to the City’s broader network of paths and trails
· Educational signage telling the story of Ana Montenegro and providing details about the local environment and history
The City has received $761,672 in grant funding to develop the park from the San Gabriel and Lower Los Angeles Rivers and Mountains Conservancy. The City will contribute $359,874 in matching funds, which are derived from Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District’s Measure A and Technical Assistance Program and the City’s Community Enhancement Fund. The total estimated cost for the park is $1.1 million.
